An artist, narrator, and designated patsy who claims Jake Ruckley is only the name of the man he is willing to sacrifice to tell the story.
Jake is the public mask, the protagonist, the smoking gun. He is broke enough to risk embarrassment, impulsive enough to slip under a chained door, and reflective enough to understand that the story is already mutating him faster than he can narrate it cleanly.
He loves and hates science fiction for the same reason: he has spent enough time dreaming about other worlds to recognize how cruel reality can feel when it finally turns strange for real. In him, KANON gets a witness who understands art, system failure, and self-mythology all at once.
His deepest function in the world is not heroism but permeability. He is the kind of person who can still be reached by a story before he understands the rules of the device carrying it.
